NET ZERO MYTH #1

Net Zero Myth #1: The first step to Net Zero is finding the funding.

The first question we're often asked is:
"Where can we get the funding?"

In reality, a more important question is:
"Do we actually know the right order to do things?"

We've seen too many projects where solar panels are installed before the building fabric is addressed, or where a heat pump is specified without fully understanding how the building is used.

Inevitably, the result is higher capital costs and lower-than-expected savings..

The most successful Net Zero projects almost always follow the same sequence:

  • Understand how the building currently performs.

  • Reduce energy demand through practical fabric improvements.

  • Optimise existing systems and controls.

  • Then invest in low-carbon technologies and renewable generation.

It's not about chasing the latest technology. It's about creating a whole-building strategy that delivers the best environmental and financial outcome.

Whether it's a listed church, a community building, a school or a district heating scheme, the principle is the same: efficiency first, technology second.

The organisations making the greatest progress towards Net Zero aren't necessarily spending the most money. They're making the right decisions in the right order.

What's been your experience? Have you seen projects where the technology was right, but the sequencing was wrong?
