SURVEYS OF EXISTING MECHANICAL & ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS

NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY ESTATES DEPARTMENT

BACKGROUND

d3associates was appointed by Northumbria University Estates Department to conduct surveys of the existing mechanical and electrical installations in the Lipman, Squires and Sandyford buildings. The aims of the surveys fell into the following scopes:

  • Assessing the condition of the mechanical and electrical installations with regard to age, projected life expectancy and operation within each building.

  • Calculating the existing heating load and assessing the heating capacities of existing plant with regard to present performance.

  • Providing alternative, more sustainable energy options with regard to reducing site wide carbon emissions.

  • Detailed analysis of existing heat emitter and plant performance when connected to a district heating system with lower operating temperatures.

  • Providing an M&E scope of work with associated costs to facilitate a connection to a low temperature district heating network with water source heat pumps being the primary energy provider.     .

OUTCOME

d3associates produced a series of detailed condition reports, system schematics and recommendations, which enabled Northumbria University to assess the options for the supply of sustainable heat and hot water to their buildings, and/or the costs of renewal or maintenance of their existing plant and equipment.
