OPTIONS FOR DECARBONISING COMMUNITY-LED BUILDINGS

NORTH YORKSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL & COMMUNITY FIRST YORKSHIRE

BACKGROUND

This project is funded by the Community Renewal Fund and a joint effort between York and North Yorkshire LEP, North Yorkshire County Council and Community First Yorkshire.

d3associates have been appointed to prepare decarbonisation options appraisals and business plans for 30 community led buildings in Richmondshire District and Scarborough Borough through a review of energy efficiency, heating systems, renewable energy generation and storage solutions.

There is a wide ranging selection of venues from village halls, charity premises and sport facilities to libraries, a museum, a theatre and a pub. The ages of the buildings vary tremendously from 12th to 21st century with an impressive array of building construction - from solid stone and brick cavity to prefabricated modular buildings.

OUTCOME

Phase 1 is complete with individual plans prepared from a desktop study of information provided by the groups.

Their plans include:

  • Costed measures to reduce energy wastage

  • Options for the electrification of heat to reduce carbon emissions

  • Ways to generate and store electricity to help lower bills

A bespoke Business Plan was issued to each group which included the outputs of the financial modelling, advice on the permissions required and detailed specifications to enable funding applications and procurement.
