ROSE COTTAGE INTERPRETATION & EDUCATION PLAN

STRATHMORE ENGLISH ESTATES AND NATURAL ENGLAND

BACKGROUND

d3associates was commissioned, in collaboration with their design partners and rural architect, to develop an interpretation and education plan. The aim was to provide a template for the enhancement of Rose Cottage (a derelict farmstead) and to create a high quality education /interpretation centre reflecting the outstanding natural environment of Upper Teesdale, Co. Durham.

The farmstead is located within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and a European Geopark. The area is therefore classed as a highly significant environment and its conservation value is heavily protected in national and international law. The interpretation plan included proposals for a soundscape chamber and external landscaped interpretation space. The Plan helped establish the design requirements for the building and provided a business case for future investment in the local visitor economy.

OUTCOME

d3a developed a marketing and business case, access study, along with an innovative interpretation and education plan to support the proposed development.
