Hydro electricity is produced by water flowing through a turbine which then turns a generator to produce electricity. There needs to be a difference in head between the source of the water and the discharge point in order to make the water flow through the turbine.
River weirs are a good place for the installation of small scale hydro electric plant as the weir generates the head required, making the installation relatively simple and reducing the effect on the watercourse. Environment Agency and Planning Approval will be needed for most projects.
