Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the process of breaking down biomass through biological action in the absence of oxygen. The process is well established in the sewage industry to reduce the quantity of sludge for disposal. The process produces a lower biomass quantity and methane gas.
The gas is typically used is a gas engine connected to a generator. The generator produces electricity for use in the process, elsewhere on site and for export. The waste heat from the gas engine is used in the AD process, which needs to be kept warm with surplus heat available for use to heat buildings etc. Once running the process is self sustaining.
