New Nursery Provision Design

Cleadon Church of England Academy

The Brief

The Academy wishes to offer sufficient high quality nursery provision, which will prepare the children for entry into reception year and fill the majority of available spaces in their two reception classes.

Following initial consultation work, d3associates was appointed to design a new 78 place nursery for the academy.  Initial design work, planning application and costings were developed to support an EFA Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) application.

The Nursery Extension adjoins the existing reception classes, and sits within a landscaped area. The extension will use the same pallet of materials as the existing school and will be similar in scale. A link block containing a new entrance lobby and group room, a flexible space for a variety of uses, will separate the new nursery and incorporate rooflights for natural light and ventilation.

The nursery and resource area is open plan with large, bifolding doors opening on to the glazed canopy and secure play area. The east elevation will also be part glazed to ensure good natural light and cross ventilation.

The Outcome

The layout of the nursery has been developed in close consultation with the Academy Steering Group. It provides a flexible and adaptable naturally lit space with plenty of storage, and facilities along with a creative outdoor play area with an external canopy, allowing the children to make the most of all-weather outdoor play and learning.
