Services

Architectural Design

High quality design that responds sensitively to the brief and location is at the heart of every project. We can provide both traditional and contemporary designs which are responsive to our clients’ needs are innovative and combine practicality and flair; underpinned by environmental sustainability.

Projects follow the RIBA Plan of Work which organises the process of briefing, designing, constructing, maintaining and operating buildings. In addition, we are able to advise clients on the professional expertise required for each project, as well as alternative procurements, through tendering and construction to completion and handing over the building.

The in-house team combines the best qualities of a small innovative multi-disciplinary practice, with the experience and depth of knowledge of a larger office, enabling us to be pro-active and provide our clients with an integrated approach to architectural design and renewable energy.

Permitted Development

The recent General Permitted Development Order (GPDO) relating to conversion of agricultural buildings to residential use has created a significant opportunity to provide a sustainable future for redundant traditional farm buildings as well as increasing asset value.

We can assist in clients in understanding the regulations and re-invigorating redundant farm buildings to create sustainable dwellings.

new build & conversions

New Build projects in rural areas are controlled by the current planning legislation, particularly in relocation to development in the Green Belt. All new development should blend easily into the surrounding environment, respecting in situ materials and colour palettes. This is equally achievable and important for both traditional and contemporary forms of construction.

Conversion and alteration projects are common in rural areas as the use of buildings changes with both the economic and social trends. The same design principles as new build apply so that extensions are subservient to the existing buildings, respecting scale, colour and materials where possible. Changes in planning legislation continue to provide opportunities to redevelop agricultural buildings no longer suitable for modern agricultural practices, to help build a sustainable future for rural communities.

listed buildings

d3associates architectural team are particularly experienced in heritage and listed building projects, ranging from listed barn and water mill conversions to farm building estates to large hospital buildings. These all require specialist planning knowledge and a sensitive approach in collaboration with conservation officers and bodies including the National Park, English Heritage and the Civic Trust.

Such projects provide challenges to find solutions that meet the client brief and aspirations, while also steadying heritage objectives.

diversification

With agricultural commodities increasingly traded on a world market, many rural enterprises have had to adapt and diversify into new ventures to ensure a sustainable future.

At d3associates we can assist this process by reviewing assets and looking at alternative uses to optimise both capital and revenue.

Renewable energy options utilising solar, biomass, heat pumps and anaerobic digestion are supported by attractive financial incentives from the Government through the Renewable Heat Incentive, Feed-in Tariff and Renewable Obligation Certificate.

Estate and farm buildings are often underutilised or not suitable for modern machinery and processes, and these offer many options for reuse. There is increasing demand for high quality commercial and light industrial space in rural areas, and there will always be demand for residential, recently made easier by the General Permitted Development Order.

d3associates can assist in review options, including design and financial viability appraisals, through to Planning applications, tendering and overseeing construction to practical completion.

energy efficiency

We provide energy audits of existing properties with recommendations to improve the efficiency of the building fabric and the potential opportunities to generate renewable energy, taking advantage of the current government financial incentives. We can offer a full business case, design and procurement service providing independent advice to guide clients.
